Welcome to the turning of the year. The light is still warm and generous, but it has begun, ever so gently, to lean toward autumn — and with it comes an invitation to slow down, look at what you've grown, and give thanks for it.

How to use this guide

Cómo usar esta guía

Take the history at your own pace — just enough to feel grounded in why this day matters, nothing you need to memorise. Everything that follows is offered gently, like a table set with more than you could ever eat in one sitting. You're welcome to take only what calls to you.

One small ritual, one shared loaf, one quiet moment of thanks — any of these, on their own, is a whole and complete way to honour Lammas. There's no wrong amount here, only what feels right for you this year.

The checklists are there to tick gently as you go, and the whole guide prints beautifully if you'd like paper on the altar rather than a screen in your hand.

A short history

Una breve historia

Two festivals wearing one name.

Dos festivales bajo un mismo nombre.

Lughnasadh — the Irish assembly

Lughnasadh — la asamblea irlandesa

The older strand is Gaelic. Lughnasadh (Irish Lúnasa, now simply the word for August) is named for Lugh, the many-skilled god — craftsman, harper, warrior, king. The medieval texts say Lugh founded the festival not for himself but as a funeral assembly for Tailtiu, his foster-mother, who cleared the forests of Ireland for planting and died of the labour. That detail is the whole holiday in miniature: abundance costs somebody something.

What actually happened was an óenach — a great assembly. Horse racing and athletic contests, matchmaking and trial marriages, the settling of debts and legal disputes, trading, music, feasting. The Tailteann Games at Teltown in County Meath were the most famous of them. Well into modern times the folklorist Máire MacNeill traced hundreds of surviving Lughnasadh customs: climbing hills and mountains, gathering the first bilberries and blackberries, visiting holy wells. Ireland's Reek Sunday pilgrimage up Croagh Patrick and the Puck Fair at Killorglin are both living descendants.

Lammas — the loaf mass

Lammas — la misa del pan

The other strand is Anglo-Saxon and Christian. Hlāfmæsse — "loaf mass" — was the day a loaf baked from the very first cut of the new grain was carried to church and blessed. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle calls it the feast of first fruits. In one surviving charm the blessed loaf is broken into four and crumbled into the corners of the barn to protect the stored harvest.

Why the two got joined

Por qué se unieron ambas tradiciones

Both fall at the same hinge of the year: the cross-quarter point midway between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox, when the first grain comes in. The modern Wheel of the Year, assembled in the twentieth century, set them side by side and most people now use the names interchangeably. It's worth knowing they are different in origin — Lughnasadh is games, assembly and a debt owed to the dead; Lammas is bread, blessing and the safe keeping of the store.

Six rituals

Seis rituales

Do one. Do them across the whole month if you like — Lughnasadh was a season before it was a date.

1 · Bless and break the first loaf

1 · Bendice y parte el primer pan

The core rite · 15 minutes · a loaf, a knife, a candle

  1. Set the whole loaf on the altar and light your candle.
  3. Hold both hands over the bread. Trace a sun wheel — a cross in a circle — on the crust with your finger.
  5. Say aloud what went into it: the field, the rain, the sun, the person who baked it, the year of your own work it stands for.
  7. Cut it. Feel the cut — that's the point of the festival.
  9. Eat the first piece yourself. Give the second to someone else, today, in person if you can.
  10. Come el primer trozo tú.
  11. Crumble a third piece outside — on the earth, the doorstep, the windowsill — as the share that isn't yours.

"First of the harvest, first of the year's return — taken with thanks, given back with thanks."

2 · Make a corn dolly

2 · Haz una muñeca de maíz

Craft · 20 minutes · a handful of long straw, wheat stalks or raffia, and string

  1. Soak the straw in warm water for ten minutes so it bends without snapping.
  3. Take a thick bundle. Tie it tightly about an inch from the top — that knot is the neck, and the tuft above it is the head.
  5. Pull a few stalks out from each side just below the neck, twist each group into an arm, and tie off the ends.
  7. Tie again lower down for the waist. Leave the rest as a skirt, or split it in two and tie legs.
  9. Wind gold or red thread around the neck and waist. Name her as you tie — the field spirit, the year's work, whatever you're asking to keep.
  11. She stays on the altar or above the hearth until spring, and is then burned or ploughed back in. What was gathered goes back to the ground.

3 · The cord-cutting

3 · El corte del cordón

Release · 10 minutes · one length of cord or thread, scissors, a heatproof dish

  1. Name one thing that has finished but you're still carrying — a job, a habit, a story about yourself, a grudge you've outgrown.
  3. Tie a knot in the cord for it. Say the thing out loud as you tie, plainly.
  5. Hold the cord in both hands and acknowledge what it gave you. It grew something, even if the harvest was hard.
  7. Cut through the knot.
  8. Corta el nudo.
  9. Burn the cut piece safely, or bury it. Keep the remaining length as the part of you that continues.

"It ripened, it fed me, it is cut. I keep the grain and let the stalk go."

Offering · 5 minutes · a cup of ale, cider, mead or juice

  1. Fill the cup fuller than you would for yourself.
  3. Take it outside — garden, park, a pot of soil, the roots of a tree.
  5. Say thank you for one specific thing this year gave you. Specific. Not "everything".
  7. Pour a good measure onto the ground. Drink the rest.
  8. Vierte una buena cantidad sobre la tierra. Bebe el resto.

5 · Walk the hill

5 · Camina hacia lo alto

The oldest one · an afternoon · your legs

El más antiguo · una tarde · tus piernas

The most stubbornly surviving Lughnasadh custom in Ireland and Britain is simply this: climb something and pick fruit on the way. Find high ground — a hill, a headland, the top of a park, a rooftop. Walk up slowly. Gather blackberries, bilberries, elderberries, anything ripe and wild along the way. At the top, look back over the ground you covered and do the same with your year. Come down. Eat what you picked.

Baja. Come lo que recogiste.

6 · Hold the feast

6 · Celebra el banquete

Community · one evening · other people

Comunidad · una tarde o noche · otras personas

Lughnasadh was never a solitary festival. It was the day the scattered came together. Ask people over. Bread on the table, something from a garden or a market, a jug of cider. Before anyone eats, go round the table and have each person name one good thing they made or finished this year. That's the ritual — the rest is dinner.

Competition belongs here too, if you want the older flavour: cards, arm-wrestling, a bake-off, a foot race in the garden. Lugh's games were the whole point of the assembly.

  • IV · The sickleLaid below card I. What has to be cut for the rest to survive?
  • V · The storeLaid above card III. What should I protect and keep back rather than spend?

Read the line as a sentence, left to right, before you read any card on its own. Note the suit balance: heavy Pentacles is a literal harvest, heavy Cups an emotional one, heavy Swords means the cutting is the message.

Honey oat harvest bread

Pan de cosecha con avena y miel

No yeast, no proving, no kneading. On the table in under an hour, which is why it survived in farmhouse kitchens on the busiest day of the year.

You need

Lo que necesitas

  • 375 g (3 cups) plain flour — wholemeal for half of it if you have it
  • 90 g (1 cup) rolled oats, plus a spoonful for the top
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 cucharadita de bicarbonato de sodio
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • 1 cucharadita de sal fina
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 cucharadas de miel
  • 420 ml (1¾ cups) buttermilk — or milk with 1 tbsp lemon juice, left 10 minutes

Method

Preparación

  1. Heat the oven to 200°C / 400°F / gas 6. Flour a baking tray.
  2. Precalienta el horno a 200 °C / 400 °F. Enharina una bandeja para hornear.
  3. Mix flour, oats, bicarbonate of soda and salt in a large bowl with your hands. Take a moment here — this is grain, and it is the reason for the day.
  5. Stir the honey into the buttermilk until it loosens, then pour into the dry mix.
  7. Bring it together with a fork, then one hand, for no more than 30 seconds. It should be shaggy and slightly sticky. Overworking it makes it tough.
Debe quedar desigual y ligeramente pegajoso. Si lo trabajas de más, quedará duro.
  9. Shape into a round on the tray. Cut a deep cross right across the top with a sharp knife — traditionally to let the fairies out, practically to let the heat in. Scatter the extra oats over.
  11. Bake 40–45 minutes, until it sounds hollow when you knock the base.
  13. Cool on a rack for at least 20 minutes. Then take it to the altar whole, and use it for the loaf-blessing above.

If you don't bake: a bought loaf is completely acceptable and always has been. Somebody still grew the grain, somebody still baked it, and your gratitude is the offering — not your baking.

Last word Última palabra

Keep something back

Guarda algo para después

Every harvest culture on earth arrives at the same instruction eventually: do not eat all of it. Some of the grain is bread and some of it is next year's seed, and the difference between the two is only what you decide.

So mark what you've gathered. Share a real share of it. Cut what needs cutting while you still have the light to see by. And keep a handful back for the ground.

Sources drawn from Irish and Anglo-Saxon festival tradition, Máire MacNeill's survey of surviving Lughnasadh customs, and modern Wheel of the Year practice. Correspondence lists vary between traditions — yours may differ, and that's allowed.
