Shadow and Bone

Alina Starkov doesn't expect much from life. She was orphaned after the war and the only thing she has in the world is her friend Mal. Following an attack on Mal as he enters the Shadow Fold, an unnatural darkness teeming with monsters that has isolated the country, Alina reveals a latent power she never knew she possessed. After this incident, Alina is forcibly taken to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, an elite group of magic-users commanded by a mysterious individual who calls himself The Darkling.
