Kiela has always struggled with people. Luckily, as a librarian in the Grand Library of Alyssium, she has spent the last decade secluded among the empire's most treasured spell books, preserving their magic for the city's elite.

When a revolution erupts and the library is set ablaze, Kiela flees with her assistant Caz, a sentient magical plant, and all the spell books they can carry. Their destination is a remote island she never thought she'd see again: her childhood home. After taking refuge in the house of her memories, she discovers that her neighbor is a nosy (very attractive) busybody who doesn't take hints and insists on visiting her day after day to make sure she has food and to help her fix up her new home.

Desperate to generate income, Kiela discovers something that even the village bakery can't offer: jam. With the help of an old recipe book from her parents and a little magic, the garden is soon overrun with bushes laden with ripe berries.

But magic can be used for more than just sweetening life, so Kiela decides to take the risk that using spells might entail and opens the first clandestine spell shop.
