The city of Eden is known for the legend of E. Starling, a reclusive author famous for writing and illustrating The Subterra... and then vanishing.

Everyone in town avoids the gloomy Starling mansion and its solitary heir, Arthur. However, even though she knows she shouldn't get involved with surly men or haunted houses, Opal can't ignore the job offer she receives. The Starling mansion soon becomes something she's never had—a home.

But sinister forces lurk within its walls, and she and Arthur must decide whether to unearth the past and confront it, or let Eden be devoured by nightmares. And if Opal wants a place to belong, she'll have to fight for it first.
